A Little History of Karen

A lot of times when I'm reading a blog, I can't help but want to know more about the person writing it.  Where do they work?  What was their past like? How did they get to where they are now?  Not that it's any of my business, and maybe I'm just being nosy, but the more I know about a blogger, the more connected I feel.  So today I'm going to share a little bit more about myself...

I lived in Florence, Alabama for the first 21 or so years of my life.  It's a fairly small college town with the University of North Alabama (where my dad teaches Biology, where I got my undergrad, and where I'm getting my Masters).  I did my internship for my undergrad at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham, Alabama and ended up getting a job and working there as the Assistant Box Office Manager for about 5 years.  I then moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to be the Box Office Manager of the new Tuscaloosa Amphitheater.  I did that for about a year and decided that I wanted to get my Masters in Business and so I quit my job and we moved back to Birmingham.

I would love to say that my career gave me that chance to hang out with rock stars all day, but it was much less glamorous.  When you work in the entertainment industry, you get very jaded very fast.  It's long hours, high stress, and not so great pay.  Of course that can be said for a lot of jobs, but I decided it just wasn't what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.  I still love being involved in the industry from time to time (great people to work with), but it's like a breath of fresh air to get away from it.

So now I'm a full time grad school student working towards my Masters in Business.  I hope that once I'm done I will be able to teach adjunct at the college level.  My husband and I want to move to Nashville to be closer to his family, and we also want to open up our own vintage store.  They seem like pretty ambitious plans, but I'd rather try and fail than to never try at all.

Random facts:
I'm considered to by shy.  I used to have social anxiety, and I probably still do, but I've pretty much gotten over any "fears" I have talking to someone.  I just tend to not say a lot when I'm around people.  If someone engages me in conversation, I'll talk, but I'm more of a listener.  I tend to not put myself in social situations in the first place and I'm more of a homebody.

I'm an only child.  I didn't grow up near my extended family either, so I think this is one of the reasons I'm looking forward to moving closer to my in-laws.

I'm not very healthy.  I would like to be, but let's face it, I couldn't run a mile if someone was chasing me with a knife.  My eating habits aren't horrible, but I've got to start exercising.  I don't care about what the scale says, but I need to get my body stronger.

I'll save my husband and I's story for Saturday, since it's our 5 year wedding anniversary.  I don't want to bore you with the same story twice!

Ok enough about me for one day!  I hope this gives you a little more insight into my life and please feel free to ask me any questions that might be lingering on your brain!

I would love it if you all would share a little about your history.  But please, don't share anything you're not comfortable with (remember, once you put it on the internet it's there forever!).  If you do decide to share, I would love for you to send me a link so I can learn a little more about you!

    1. Thanks Katherine! After I finished my undergrad, I'm pretty sure I swore to never go to college again. I hated it too!

  2. I loved reading this post and getting to know you a little better. I definitely feel the same way about opening up. It's hard to do but it brings you that much closer to your readers because they have things to identify with and it reminds us that there is a real person behind the blog :] I would love to move to Nashville. One of the things I noticed when I was in Tennessee this past summer for Bonnaroo, was that people are A LOT friendlier there than they are where I live, and Tennessee is so beautiful! I am super shy too which is probably why I've been living here for a year and a half and have no friends yet. Another BIG thing is that I work from home. I really need to just get another part-time gig and get back on the social train. Anyway, thanks for sharing :]

    1. I know. Working from home is weird. I miss the everyday social interaction. I guess that's why I like blogging so much. I at least get a little bit of human contact, even if it's through the computer!

  3. I too am on a mission to get healthier. I really noticed how many excuses I was making for not exercising and eating crap, and I'm kind of disappointed in myself! I just started working part time at my uncle's gym so no more excuses from me! I think you just have to really make yourself do it and it becomes easier as you go.

There's nothing wrong with being ambitious! It sounds like you have awesome plans (and Nashville's a pretty awesome place!).

  4. Thank you for sharing. Move to Nashville and open up a vintage shop? Please... PLEASE!!! I would love to go there!

I'm sure you will kick your MBA in the butt. Going back and getting your master's is hard work, but rewarding. Just remember to pat yourself on the back sometimes :)

    1. I know, I can't wait to move up there. We're going to put our house on the market at the beginning of the year, so whenever it sells, we'll be moving. Hopefully it won't take too long!

  5. I love learning more about you! Like you, I am not much of a talker in social situations unless I am one on one or really comfortable with the people.

Random things: I haven't had any relationship with my parents for about four years. They are really unhealthy people and I have a painful childhood so have been working on healing that. It makes me sad not to have a mom or dad in my life. But I'm realizing I really never had them to begin with.

I have dyed my hair since I was 12!

I knew I was going to marry my husband even before we started dating, and I'm so glad we got together!

  6. I agree. I always want to know more when I'm reading blogs. I'm nosy too.
I feel the same way about social anxiety. I used to have it so bad, but I think now I'm just comfortable. I used to have a lot of people tell me I seemed like a bitch because I didn't talk much but I was just anxious. And hearing people say that brought the anxiety to a huger level, now I just don't care. Maybe I am a bitch! ;)
I'm a half only child. I'm my dad's only kid, my moms 2nd kid but I've only seen my mom twice since I was 12 and she raised my sister so I've always pretty much been an only child.
i totally agree with you on the healthy stuff. I dont eat complete crap but i do want to be strong. I like my body how it is but I want to know I could beat the crap out of someone if I needed to! Or like you said, run away!! LOL
    I liked this! Share more!

    1. I know. People used to think I was stuck-up and that would baffle me because I was so self conscious. I think time wears a lot of that down. I totally want to be able to beat the crap out of someone too. That's a great skill to have!

  7. What a great idea. I always like to read more about bloggers I follow. I think I might do a post like this, as I tend to mainly blog about art and fashion I don't think my readers get to know me. I think a lot of people can relate to social anxiety. I suffered from it when I was in high school, leading to me feeling very different and isolated from a lot of people. Thankfully I made some amazing friends at college who brought me out of my shell. It seems to me most people suffer from either anxiety or depression (or both) at some point in their lives. This helps make me feel a little less different and "weird".

  8. Thanks for sharing, I feel like all of us bloggers are kind of the same way when it comes to being nosy ;)
I'm also one of those people who is often seen as being stuck up when in social situations, I never was this way when I was younger but over the years it's gotten pretty bad to the point where I don't really talk unless spoken to. However, when I'm comfortable with someone and there aren't to many people around....I won't shut up and get kinda crazy :/ (like singing/dancing for no reason crazy) and very sarcastic as well. I'm on a mission though to try and find myself again, because this is my life and I'm planning on it being a long one so I better start feeling comfortable and enjoying it :)
